This is an important outcome indicating that nanoplastic stability and dispersion state will be more pronounced and therefore more challenging to eliminate. Results highlight the key role of NP and PS nanoplastic surface charge, as well as water properties, coagulant type, and dosage on nanoparticle elimination from aquatic systems. PRACTITIONER POINTS pH, water hardness, and NOM are playing roles in final coagulant dosage concentration. PACl is more efficient than FeCl3 in most conditions. Positively charged nanoplastics are more difficult to eliminate by coagulation. NP surface properties in bottled mineral and surface waters are controlled by pH, divalent cations, and NOM. NP surface charge and coagulation efficiency depend on water properties. © 2020 Water Environment Federation.OBJECTIVES This study's purpose was to compare physical growth (PG) patterns of children and adolescents living at high elevations with those of other geographic regions, relate body adiposity indicators, and develop percentile reference tables for assessing physical growth and body adiposity. METHODS The sample included 1536 children and adolescents ages 5.0 to 17.9 years from Puno (Peru) located between 3821 and 4349 m above sea level. Weight, height, arm and waist circumferences (WC), and three skinfolds measurements were recorded. Body mass index (BMI) and waist-height Index (WHI) were calculated. RESULTS PG patterns for children living at a high altitude reflected similar values for weight, height, and arm circumference (AC) to those of their counterparts living in Puno (Peru) and La Paz (Bolivia). When compared with children living at moderate altitudes in Peru, they showed slightly lower PG values. BMI explained between 41% and 64% of the variance in sum of the skinfolds, while WC explained between 47% and 66%. HWI was not a strong predictor of variation in sum of skinfolds. Percentiles were generated for WC and the sum of skinfolds. CONCLUSION Weight, height, and, arm and waist circumference patterns for children and adolescents living at high altitudes were similar to those of La Paz (Bolivia). WC and the sum of the skinfolds were better indicators for analyzing abdominal obesity compared to BMI and WHI. The percentiles proposed may be a useful tool for identifying high risk of developing overweight disorders in pediatric populations living at high altitudes. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.OBJECTIVES Diarrhoeal illness is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality and has long-term negative impacts on child development. Although flooring, water and sanitation have been identified as important routes of transmission of diarrhoeal pathogens, research examining variability in the association between flooring and diarrhoeal illness by water and sanitation is limited. METHODS We utilised cross-sectional data collected for the evaluation of Zimbabwe's Prevention of Mother-to-Child HIV transmission programme in 2014 and 2017-18. Mothers of infants 9-18 months of age self-reported the household's source of drinking water and type of sanitation facility, as well as infant diarrhoeal illness in the four weeks prior to the survey. Household flooring was assessed using interviewer observation, and households in which the main material of flooring was dirt/earthen were classified as having unimproved flooring, and those with solid flooring (e.g. cement) were classified as having improved flooring. RESULTS Mothers of infants living in households with improved flooring were less likely to report diarrhoeal illness in the last four weeks (PDa = -4.8%, 95% CI -8.6, -1.0). The association between flooring and diarrhoeal illness did not vary by the presence of improved/unimproved water (pRERI = 0.91) or sanitation (pRERI = 0.76). CONCLUSIONS Our findings support the hypothesis that household flooring is an important pathway for the transmission of diarrhoeal pathogens, even in settings where other aspects of sanitation are sub-optimal. Improvements to household flooring do not require behaviour change and may be an effective and expeditious strategy for reducing childhood diarrhoeal illness irrespective of household access to improved water and sanitation. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the nutritional and bone health status between young men with mild-to-moderate intellectual disability and those without intellectual disability and to determine predictors for their bone health status. METHOD A total of 95 men (47 men with intellectual disability; 48 men without intellectual disability), aged 20-39 years, participated in this study. Anthropometric profile, dietary intake, physical activity level and calcaneal speed of sound (SOS) were collected. RESULTS The men with intellectual disability had moderate diet quality whilst the men without intellectual disability had poor diet quality. More participants with intellectual disability (97.9%) were inactive compared with their counterparts (10.4%). The SOS value was similar between groups and was lower than the reference. Increasing age and low physical activity level were negative predictors for bone health status. CONCLUSION Both young men with and without intellectual disability have suboptimal nutritional and bone health status. Strategies to improve their nutritional and bone health status are warranted. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this scoping review is to describe the current use of pre-hospital transfusion of red blood cells (PHTRBC) and to evaluate criteria used to initiate PHTRBC. The effects on patients' outcomes will be reviewed in Part 2. BACKGROUND Haemorrhage is a preventable cause of death in trauma patients, and transfusion of red blood cells is increasingly used by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for damage control resuscitation. However, there are no guidelines and little consensus on when to initiate PHTRBC. METHODS PubMed and Web of Science were searched through January 2019; 71 articles were included. RESULTS Transfusion triggers vary widely and involve vital signs, clinical signs of poor tissue perfusion, point of care measurements and pre-hospital ultrasound imaging. In particular, hypotension (most often defined as systolic blood pressure ≤ 90 mmHg), tachycardia (most often defined as heart rate ≥ 120/min), clinical signs of poor perfusion (eg, prolonged capillary refill time or changes in mental status) and injury type (ie, penetrating wounds) are common pre-hospital transfusion triggers. CONCLUSIONS PHTRBC is increasingly used by Emergency Medical Services, but guidelines on when to initiate transfusion are lacking. We identified the most commonly used transfusion criteria, and these findings may provide the basis for consensus-based pre-hospital transfusion protocols. © 2020 The Authors. Using a fragmented rural landscape in temperate south-eastern Canada as a reference landscape, we apply our multi-dimensional approach to evaluate two alternative management strategies at three levels of intensity (1) functional enrichment of current forest patches and (2) multi-species plantations in previously non-forested patches. Within each management strategy, p biodiversity-enhancing species (i.e. species that maximize functional diversity) mitigated drought effects equally well as planting with drought-tolerant species. Our multi-dimensional approach facilitates the characterisation at the landscape scale of forest resilience to disturbances using both functional diversity and network properties while accounting for the importance of response traits to future disturbances. The simulation approach we used can be applied to forest landscapes across different biomes for the evaluation and comparison of forest management initiatives to enhance resilience. To maintain the homeostatic state, coordination of sensing of the ROS injury and the subsequent epithelial cell loss with the replenishment by cell renewal is crucial. However, little is known about how gut epithelial cells initiate regenerative responses against ROS to maintain the tissue integrity. Here, we carried out a genome-wide screen, by which we identify immunoglobulin superfamily beaten path Ib (beat-Ib) as an essential gene for provoking ISC proliferation against ROS in Drosophila intestine. Interestingly, the beat-Ib function is required in differentiated enterocytes, the main targeted cells by ROS in the intestinal tract, but is dispensable in the stem cells. Moreover, beat-Ib is not involved in enterocyte apoptosis at ROS injury. We parametrically controlled modulation rate via the correlation coefficient (r) of amplitude spectra across fixed frequency channels between adjacent time frames broadband modulation spectra are biased toward slow modulate rates with increasing r, and vice versa. By concatenating segments with different r, acoustic changes of various directions (e.g., changes from low to high correlation coefficients, that is, random-to-correlated or vice versa) and sizes (e.g., changes from low to high or from medium to high correlation coefficients) can be obtained. Participants listened to sound blocks and detected changes in correlation while MEG was recorded. Evoked responses to changes in correlation demonstrated (a) an asymmetric representation of change direction random-to-correlated changes produced a prominent evoked field around 180 ms, while correlated-to-random changes evoked an earlier response with peaks at around 70 and 120 ms, whose topographies resemble those of the canonical P50m and N100m responses, respectively, and (b) a highly non-linear representation of correlation structure, whereby even small changes involving segments with a high correlation coefficient were much more salient than relatively large changes that did not involve segments with high correlation coefficients. Induced responses revealed phase tracking in the delta and theta frequency bands for the high correlation stimuli.
